メキシコ出身作家、ガブリエル・リコ個展開催中@ペロタン東京(六本木)

メキシコ出身のアーティスト、ガブリエル・リコの個展「THE PROPAGATION OF TEURÁRI」が、東京・六本木のペロタン東京にて開催中。アーティストが過去10年にわたりコラボレーションを行ってきた、先住民グループに捧げる展覧会だ。

1980年メキシコ、ラゴス・デ・モレノ生まれで現在も同国を拠点に活動する、ガブリエル・リコ。発見・収集・製造された素材を組み合わせ、人間と自然環境の関係性について思案させる立体作品を制作するアーティストだ。インスタレーションといったリコの作品は、皮肉的かつ詩的に、自然・不自然な形状を組み合わせ、その非対称性やひいては見るものの文化的・政治的欠落について不可欠な熟考を促している。

本展は、過去10年にわたりコラボレーションを行ってきた先住民グループに捧げるというもの。ファースト・ネーション(北米先住民族)や先住民がもつ非西洋的な知識を融合し、自然とのより強固なつながりの構築をはかった最新作が展示中だ。作品には先住民の伝統的な職人技であるニエリカ(毛糸絵)の技法や、チャキラ(ガラスビーズ)を活用し、民俗学的な創造プロセスを促進するとともに、鹿や自然要素を神聖なものとして扱う普遍的で新しい構図を、ウィシャリカ(メキシコのウイチョル族)の職人たちの手でつくり出すことを可能にしている。

本展タイトルにもある「テウラリ」とは、鹿の姿をした神の化身を意味するもの。先住民の自然に基づく信仰が、保護的・進化的な観点から、多くの人々に人間と地球の関係を再考するきっかけを与えてくれるはずだ。ぜひお見逃しなく。
