歴史的物語を紡ぐアーティスト、ウマー・ラシッドによる日本初個展＠Blum & Poe

ロサンゼルスを拠点に活動するアーティスト、ウマー・ラシッドによる個展「鎖国の時代の景虎の夢。(複数の赤と青) 第 1 編」が、東京・原宿のBlum & Poeにて開催。会期は、2023年9月2日（土）〜10月14日（土）まで。

Umar Rashid: Kagetora’s dream in the time of Sakoku. (Reds and Blues). Part 1 The limits of isolation on the body politic creates the pockets of resistance. The rebellion is always glamorous in the beginning. The revolutionary ultimately dies, acquiesces, or embraces escapism as a balm. The visionary, however, maneuvers uncertainty with purpose and nurtures the vision beyond the boundaries of mortality. There, it grows. Long live the dreamers of the impossible dreams. ラシッドは、絵画、ドローイング、彫刻を通して、17年以上にわたって展開してきた「フレングリッシュ帝国(1648-1880 年)」と名付けた壮大な歴史的フィクションを記録してきた。本展で紹介される最新作は、ニューヨークのMoMA PS1 で開催された個展「Ancien Regime Change 4, 5, and 6」の続編にあたるもの。壮大な物語が東アジアを舞台に18世紀後半から19世紀初頭へとつながっていく。

本展の絵画作品は日本を舞台に展開され、神奈川、静岡、新潟 (旧・越後国)、長崎の出島といった地域が登場する。鎖国時代の出来事をゆるやかに描写したこの物語は、日本全国、そして世界各地を舞台にした架空の「麒麟騎士団」の冒険を描いている。

「鎖国の時代の景虎の夢。(複数の赤と⻘) 第 1 編:政治的統一体の限界が孤立地域を作る。その反乱の初めはいつも華やかである。革命家は最終的に死ぬか、屈服するか、あるいは癒しと して逃避を受け入れる。しかし空想家は、目的とともに不確実性を操り、死という境界を越えてビジョンを育む。ほら、ぐんぐんと。不可能を夢見る者たちよ、万歳。キリンに、私たちは 打ち明ける」
