Takumi Kawahara is the other half of the husband and wife team. He is the producer who made KonMari a household name worldwide and will be publishing his first book. The power couple returned to Japan for the book publication and sat with us for this three-part interview on their journey together, from their first encounter to their current success.

──世界一有名な日本人になることを、最初から想像していましたか？

川原卓巳（以下T）「いえいえ、求めてすらいなかったです。だって片づけが好きなんですよ。家にいたいんです。ときめく家で、ときめく物と向き合っていたかったわけで」

──こんまりメソッドでクライアントの家を片づけるネットフリックスの番組「KonMari ～人生がときめく片づけの魔法～」は卓巳さんがプロデュースしたんですよね。

T「本だけでは伝えきれないこんまりメソッドをを、より広く届きやすい形で知ってもらいたいという思いがあった中で、ネットフリックスさんから番組制作のお話をいただきました」

──番組で麻理恵さんは日本語で話していて、字幕がつきますよね。

近藤麻理恵（以下M）「世界190カ国・地域で放映されると、どの言語でも字幕がつくので、ネットフリックスさんのほうから、別に無理して英語で喋らなくてもいいし、通訳さんを介してでも自分らしくできることが一番大切だと言っていただいて、日本語で話しました。大変だったのはやっぱりスケジュールですね。アメリカサイズのお宅だと半年ぐらいかけてやっと片づけるぐらいが一般的なペースなのですが、制作側は1週間とか3日間でビフォーアフターを録りたいという意識なので、すごく体力的に厳しいんです」

──そんな中、素晴らしい番組になりましたね。

M「スタッフさんがすごくよかったんです」

T「チームとして誰とやるかは非常に大事なので、ネットフリックスには、ただ腕が立つだけじゃなく、こんまりメソッドを伝えることで世の中が良くなると思ってくれる人と番組を作りたいと伝えて、事前に面接をしてもらいました。片づけが好きだったり、逆に困っていたりと、みんなに自分ごととして取り組んでいただけたので面白いものができたと思っています。ライトや音響で関わってるクルーも部屋が綺麗になっていく様をみんな目の当たりにしているから、自分も片づけたくなっちゃう。だから撮影オフの日の翌日に集まると、みんながスマホを見せてきて自宅が変わった様子を教えてくれたり、『奥さんに喜ばれたんだよ』と報告してくれたり、関わる人みんながどんどんハッピーになっていったんです」

──麻理恵さんのパフォーマンスを、最大限引き出したのが卓巳さんの力量だとよくわかるエピソードです。一方、仕事を詰め込みすぎてすごく後悔したこともあったと、今回出版される本にも書かれていましたよね。

T「詳しくは本を読んでいただきたいですが、もう限界だなと感じた出来事がきっかけで、彼女らしくいられる状態を作るために、できる限り負担を小さくすることを誓いました」

──麻理恵さんは卓巳さんの本が出ることについては、どんなお気持ちですか？　彼の魅力を広く知らしめたいと思いますか？

M「やっとだな、と思っています。私のことを『すごいですね』と言っていただく度に『いえいえ、この人のほうがすごいんです』『みんな卓巳さんのすごさはわかってないんだな』って思いながら、それを心にしまいながら普通に『ありがとうございます』と言ってます。

でも、『卓巳さんのすごさを知ってほしい！』というつもりも無いんです。私としては、何かを目指す時期は終わってしまった。営業で1位を取りたかったし、100万部も狙って打ちましたが、『100万部打てちゃった……！』っていうところから先は、勝手に数字が積み上がって、いただくものをこなしてきたので、私はもう、この本についても自然に、広く読まれるものになると確信しています。自分が何を好きだかわからない方に気づきを与えるバイブルになると思いますし、今の社会で本当に必要とされていることが書いてあります」

T「僕たちが幸いにも海外で結果を出すことができたことは、僕自身が特別だからということではないと思うんです。当たり前とされてきた成功のイメージって僕はある程度嘘もあると思っていて。今までは僕みたいな人にあまり光を当てちゃ駄目だったと思うんです。影であるべきだった。でも、有名じゃなくても、どこにいても、どんな規模感でも、それぞれが自分の役割を見出せさえすれば、幸せに生きていくことができますよね。

面白いのは、麻理恵さんが1冊目の本を書いたときに『自分が書いたじゃなくて、書かせてもらった。書く必要があって書いた』と話していたんですよ。そのときはわかりませんでしたが、僕も今その感覚になっていて。世の中の流れに必要とされることがあって、たまたまそれを僕が喋る人だったという感じなんです」

──麻理恵さんの本を超える部数になったりして。

M「卓巳さんの本に関しては数字だけで評価されるものじゃないと思いますよ。私は本にめちゃくちゃこだわって、部数にもこだわりましたが、卓巳さんが出す結果とか影響力や、世の中に伝えるものの意味が部数に関わらず私よりも大きいんじゃないかな」

──さすが、いいパートナーですね。でも、ここまで深く理解して尊敬し合うまでには衝突もありましたか？

M「感情に任せてケンカすることはあまりないのですが、ちゃんと話すことを重ねてきました」

T「小競り合いはしょっちゅう……自分が何に不快感を感じるかを話し合って、違和感をそのまま飲み込まずに、明確に伝えて、解決方法を考えるんです。麻理恵さんは、何かあれば『ここが不快です』ってすぐ言ってくれるのでわかりやすいし、言われてないときは大丈夫だと思える。それ以外は自由にさせてもらってるっていることが、一緒に生きていく上でありがたいなと思います」

──“さん付け”で呼び合うところにもお互いのリスペクトを感じられます。

M「もともとは叔父と叔母が夫婦同士“さん付け”で呼び合っていたのを美しいと感じて、小さい頃から憧れていて、妹のことも“さん付け”しているんです。身内を“さん付け”するのが、なんか楽しいなぁって。なので、私から卓巳さんに提案しました」

T「あえて崩さずに呼ぶというだけで、なんだか丁寧に接することができる気がしますよね。もともとは大学生の頃から “こんまり”とあだ名で呼んでいたので、僕たちも最初はすごく違和感があったんですけど、モジモジする期間も楽しいので皆さんにおすすめします（笑）」

──ずっと一緒にいて本当にお互いに不満はない？

M「うーん、不満を溜めずに過ごしているので、あらためて聞かれると思い出せないですね。もちろん、ちっちゃなことはありますよ。お茶を飲むときにあんまりズズーっと音を立てないでくださいね、とか。でも、私のほうがどちらかというとだらしないので（笑）」

T「そうなんですよ！ スリッパとか脱ぎ散らかすので、いつも僕が元の位置に戻すんです。意外ですよね。でも私の希望としては、元気でいてもらえればそれでいいです。もっと運動するとか、自分で自分を元気にすることを意識してほしいなとは思っています。健康第一で」

──今後の目標はありますか？

M「これからは、子どもともっとちゃんと向き合いたいですね」

T「僕は仕事の傍ら執筆をしていたこの四カ月間、ものすごく大変でしたが、こうして本が出て、日本にも来られてありがたいです。本当に人生って何が起こるか全然わからない。変わりたい、あるいは素の自分を生かしたいと願う人が、自分でスイッチをパチンと入れられたら何だって叶う。僕はそう思うし、僕の本を読んでもらうことが何かのきっかけや力になれたら嬉しいです。それと、今日は著者として大先輩の麻理恵さんに本を褒めていただいたのも、実はめちゃくちゃ喜んでいます。あとで肩を揉みます（笑）」

──Did you set out to make Marie-san an international icon?

Takumi Kawahara (T): Not in the least. Marie-san likes to organize her home. She likes to stay at home that sparks joy, surrounded by things that spark joy.

──Takumi-san, you are the producer of the Netflix series, Tidying up with Marie Kondo where Marie-san visits her clients and tidy their homes.

T: We got the TV series offer from Netflix, right as we were exploring ways to better show the KonMari Method that couldn’t cover in the book.

──Marie-san speaks Japanese in the program with subtitles.

Marie Kondo (M) : Netflix proposed that I speak in my own words in my native tongue with the help of an interpreter, because the series was streaming in 190 countries and regions with subtitles. The biggest challenge of the show was the impossibly tight schedule. Organizing an American-size home would normally be a six-month project, but the production schedule only allowed three days to a week for a dramatic outcome, and that was grueling.

──The show was phenomenal despite the time constraint.

M: We have an amazing team.

T: We took a great deal of care in selecting the team. We asked Netflix to interview for not only the best professionals but people who also believe that KonMari Method would benefit the world. The show was a success because everybody involved either loved organizing or was tackling tidying issues of their own. The entire crew, like the light and sound technicians, witnessed the magic of tidying before their own eyes, which inspired them to organize their own surroundings. We felt the magic of tidying up when the crew would clean their own homes on their off days and share the results and positive impact at home with the team.

── That’s a great example of how Takumi-san brings out the best of Marie-san’s talents. On the other hand, you mentioned in your new book on regrets of taking on too much.

T: I go into depth on this in the book, but yes, there was a tipping point when I decided to make it my priority to minimize her stress and create an environment where she can be herself.

──Marie-san, how do you feel about Takumi-san coming out with his own book? What would you want people to know about Takumi-san?

M: It’s about time! People tell me my work is amazing, and I graciously thank them, but I’m thinking to myself, “you obviously don’t know my husband. This is all Takumi-san.” That doesn’t mean I feel the need to publicly promote Takumi-san’s talents. Right now, I no longer feel the need to prove myself. Becoming the top salesperson and writing a bestseller were goals I set, but when my book sold over million copies, I felt that it was the momentum taking its natural course, and I was just following through on it. This book is full of necessary points for navigating today’s world, and I’m confident it will reach the people and act as the guiding light for the people searching for their passion.

T: We are grateful for our international success, but I am by no means an exceptional individual. I think typical success stories are more or less a work of fiction. Traditionally, a person in my role would have faded into the background and remained anonymous, but success is not just about being in the spotlight. The key to a joyful life is finding your own role, no matter how small or what the role entails.

When Marie-san wrote her first book, she told me, “I didn’t write this book. The book wrote itself because it had to be written.” I didn’t understand her at the time, but that’s exactly how I feel about my book. There was an issue that had to be addressed, and I happened to be the voice to speak it.

──Perhaps Takumi-san’s book will outrank Marie-san on the bestseller list.

M: Success of Takumi-san’s book can’t be measured simply by the number of copies sold. My books had very set sales goals, but Takumi-san is far more focused on how this book will impact its readers.

── You understand and respect each other in a way only a true partner could. Were there many ups and downs getting to this point?

M: We rarely get into emotional fights. We’ve always discussed things rationally.

T: We do have small fights all the time, but we address issue without sweeping them under the rug and look for a solution together. I don’t have to play guessing games with Marie-san because she will let me know exactly what is bothering her. Having this trust is very liberating and I appreciate that as her partner.

──The way you call each other Marie-san* and Takumi-san shows your deep mutual respect.
(*san is a semi-formal honorific title)

M: This goes back to my uncle and his wife who called each other with san. As a little girl, I found this to be beautiful and even address my younger sister with a san. There’s an uplifting sense of joy in using the honorific form at home and suggested we adopt the custom to Takumi-san.

T: When you address each other respectfully, you naturally treat each other in such manners. It took a little getting used to because I had been calling her KonMari since college, but even the slight awkwardness of the transition period was fun, so I would recommend it.

──Is there anything you would want to change about each other?

M: I can’t think of anything because we usually just work out issues as they come up. Of course, there are small things like the way he slurps his tea a little too loudly, but I’m in no position to criticize because I have bad habits of my own as well.

T: You would never believe me, but Marie-san is terrible about leaving her slippers everywhere! I pick up after her and return them to where they belong. My only wish for her is that she takes better care of herself, like work out more. Staying healthy is all I ask from her.

──What are your current goals?

M: We are hoping to spend more time with our children.

T: The four months I spent writing this while running our business was tough, but I’m grateful that the book is coming out and it brought us back to Japan. You never know what life has in store for you. If you want to change or you want to live as your authentic self, you have to be the one to turn on that switch, and infinite possibilities will open up. I hope this book will help people turn on that switch, and that would bring me pure joy.

Another thing that brought me joy today was that a bestselling author, Marie-san, spoke so highly of my first book. I’ll have to be extra nice to her for this.

──結婚後、お二人はなぜアメリカで暮らすことになったんですか？

川原卓巳（以下T）「2010年に彼女の本が出て、14年に出版社からアメリカで本を出さないかという話をいただき、興味を持ってくださるなら出してみようと。ただ、売れるなんて全く思ってなかったんです。アメリカって広いじゃないですか。だから、片づけに困ってるなんて微塵も思ってなかったし、そもそも行ったことすらなかった。『よし、海外進出だ！』なんて野望もなかったし、英語もまったく喋れませんでした。でも実際に出版講演のために訪れたら、本を読んで感動してくれている方がたくさんいらして、感謝されて。実はサンフランシスコやニューヨークは、日本とそれほど変わらない家事情だったり、アパートメントに住んでいらっしゃる方も多かったです」

──そのときは本当に移住するつもりは一切なく？

近藤麻理恵（以下M）「最初はサンフランシスコに出版社さんがあったので、本当にただ出張していただけなんです」

T「移住するとはまったく考えていなかったですね。2015年ぐらいからアメリカを皮切りに40カ国ぐらいで本が翻訳されることになって、イギリス、フランス、ドイツ、イタリア……一年の半分ぐらい海外を行き来することになったんです。同時にプライベートでは子どもを授かって」

──お子さんは日本で生まれたんですね。

T「そうなんです。お義母さんに子どもを預けながら、あちこち出張へ出かけていく日々でした。合計すると半年も子どもと一緒にいられなかったので、この生活を続けることは本当に自分たちにとって幸せなのかと悩みました。僕ら自身がアメリカに渡って、仕事も子育ても向こうですればもっと家族で一緒にいられるんじゃないか。これをチャンスと捉えてみたらいいんじゃないかと考えて、2016年に移住しました」

──言葉の壁はどうやって乗り越えました？

T「全然勉強せずに渡米の日を迎えてしまって、現地で個人レッスンを受けました。僕にとっては英語で英語を教わるというハードルは高かったのですが、コミュニケーションを取ること自体は好きなので、なんとか仕事ができるぐらいまでに習得できました。彼女にとっては苦行だったと思います」

M「週四回、先生に自宅へ来ていただいて、趣味のこととか何でも喋りたいことをどうぞ言われるんですけど、その場で喋りたいことが特になくて先生を困らせていました（笑）。その調子だとレッスンが終わっちゃうので、作り話じゃないけどなんとなく会話っぽいことを話したりして、疲れて体力を消耗するという……。それを一年半続けた頃に、通訳さんなしの講演の仕事が入ったんです。しかも、Facebookの創業者であるマーク・ザッカーバーグが講演するような2,500人規模の大舞台（サウス・バイ・サウスウエスト2017）で。その当時はまだ英語を聞くことはできても喋れなかったので、全部台本を書いて、１時間ぶんの台本を一字一句丸暗記して臨みました」

T「振り返れば無茶ぶりが過ぎることはわかりますし、二人の関係も良い状態ではなかったですね。彼女は四六時中講演のための原稿を読んで、音声を聞いて、ブツブツ喋っているから、会話もなく、僕は罪悪感に苛まれて」

M「産後で体がボロボロだったんですよ。年子で下の子が生まれたばかりで、そもそも講演自体も得意でも好きでもないのに、決まってるからやるしかない。台詞を忘れたらステージで何も喋れなくなっちゃうので、必死で覚えるしかなくて」

T「やる以上は恥ずかしいものを見せたくないという強いこだわりを見せたうえに、会場の笑いまで取ってるんですよ。でも、怖くてもうその後二度と同じことはさせられないと思いました」

──麻理恵さんは本番に強いタイプ？

M「強いですね。本番は打ちます」

T「満塁ホームランを打つタイプです。本番に向けて、全てを集中させることができるけど、打たないときはバッターボックスにすら立たない。『なんで立つの？』って聞かれちゃうので、マネージャーとしてはめちゃくちゃ大変です。『試合です！ ボール来てますっ！』と急かしても彼女は優雅にティーを飲んでいたりします（笑）。それでも『やってくれる』と信じて待つんですけど、講演1分前までその状態だとさすがに焦ります。『今日はもう駄目かもしれない。代わりにカツラをかぶって出るか……』と覚悟した局面も過去にはありました（笑）」

──でもさすがに卓巳さんが麻理恵さんに扮したご経験はないと（笑）。アメリカではハロウィンの“こんまりコスチューム”も人気ですよね。そのぐらい誰もが知るスターになられて。

T「そうですね。ありがたいことに2015年にタイム誌の『世界で影響力のある100人』に選んでいただいて、2016年に移住して、2017年にその大舞台が決まって、週に400件以上ものオファーが届いていました。僕は会社も経営してるから結果を出すことに精一杯で、彼女の調子が悪くなっていたりとか、ストレスを抱えているのはわかっていながら、見て見ぬふりをしていたところもありました」

──卓巳さんが選んだ仕事に対して、麻理恵さんは「やりたくない」とは言わない？

M「しょっちゅう言ってましたね」

T「基本的には全部『ノー』ですよ。仕事を受けるか受けないか相談するタイミングすら超重要なので、何とかして『イエス』と言ってもらうために綿密に準備するんです。まずは機嫌がいい状態に整えて、首を縦に振りそうなタイミングで手際よく『シュッ！』とわんこそばのように差し出す（笑）。産後でとにかく疲れていて全部休みたいはずなのに、会社を経営しちゃってるから止まれなかったんですよ。今、振り返っても苦々しい思い出です」

──夫としてではなく、経営者の自分を優先されていた時期だったと。今は変わりました？

T「はい。麻理恵さんとよく話すのは、仕事は単にお金稼ぐことじゃないということです。あなたが生み出した片づけのメソッドが、多くの人々の人生を良くするのだと。その結果、自分もいい人生になると思っているけど、忙しかったり自分がいい状態じゃないとそんなふうに考えられなくなる。僕自身は、いつでもやめてもいいと思ってるんですよ。苦しんでまでやることじゃないと、今は思うようになっていて。公私ともに、立場を超えて人間として信じてもらえてるから、ギリギリ繋がって、これまで乗り越えてきてたっていうのが本音です」

──麻理恵さんは夫でありマネージャーである卓巳さんのことをどう思っていますか？

M「もう最高だと思ってますよ。明るく元気でシンプル。あとはやっぱり心が健康だなっていつも思います、まっすぐで。だから、卓巳さんに言われたら、目的がちゃんとしている仕事は頑張ります。世の中に伝えるために、本当にいい方法だと思って提案してくれているというのは、やっぱりわかるので。それが一番ありがたいです」

T「それが伝わっていて嬉しいです」

──アメリカに行ってよかったと思いますか？

T「もう、来なかった人生は考えられないですね」

──What motivated your move to the US after you got married?

Takumi Kawahara (T): Marie-san’s first book came out in 2010, and in 2014 there was an offer for the American edition. We were happy to sign but didn’t have high hopes for it. We had never lived abroad and assumed that all American people lived in large homes and had no issues with home organization. We didn’t speak any English and had zero plan of relocating. But during the book signing tour, we met many people who truly appreciated the book and realized that many apartments in cities like New York or San Francisco were not much different in size from the houses in Japan.

──So you initially had no interest in relocating?

Marie Kondo (M) : Initially, we were just going on business trips to see our publisher in San Francisco.

T: Relocation was not in our plan. In 2015, Marie-san’s book came out in 40 countries, starting with the US, followed by UK, France, Germany and Italy and we ended up spending half of the year overseas. At the same time, we were blessed with our first child.

──Your daughter was born in Japan?

T: Yes, and we had to leave her with her grandmother to go on our business trips. We were with our child for less than half of the year and had to think hard if continuing this lifestyle made us happy. We came to the conclusion that living and working in the US would secure us more time to spend as a family and decided to relocate in 2016.

──How did you get over the language barrier?

T: We left Japan without any time to brush up on our English, so we found a tutor after we arrived. Studying with a non-Japanese speaking teacher was a challenge, but I enjoy communicating with people, so it didn’t take too long to learn enough to manage my business. Marie-san on the other hand had a harder time.

M: The tutor would come to our house four times a week, and she would tell me to talk about anything I want to, but the lessons went nowhere because there wasn’t much that I wanted to talk about. Forcing myself to make up stories and carry on conversations was exhausting. After a year and a half of these lessons, I was asked to give a talk without an interpreter. It was for an audience of 2500 (South by Southwest 2017), at an event where people like Mark Zuckerberg were the speakers. My listening comprehension had improved, but my speech level was nowhere near fluent, so I wrote out and memorized the one-hour script verbatim.

T: Looking back, I realize I was asking too much from her, and our relationship wasn’t in a great place either. She had her face buried in the script, listening to the audio script and mumbling the lines to herself. We barely talked, and I was guilt stricken watching her.

M:I was a mess because I had just given birth to my second child, and she came only a year after my first. I’m not good at nor enjoy giving talks, but it was already booked, and I had no choice but to do it. All I could do was memorize word for word, because I had no way out if I went completely blank on stage.

T: She decided that if she’s going to do it, she wanted to be amazing, which she was. She even cracked a few jokes on stage, but it was nerve-wracking, and I swore I would never do this to her again.

──Do you perform well under pressure, Marie-san?

M: I like to think so. I’ll hit if I’m up at bat.

T: She’ll hit a full-base homerun. She can be completely focused when it counts, but if she’s not up for it, she won’t even go up to bat. She’ll just ask, “why would I have to do that?” As her manager, I would have to beg her, “please, you are up next!” and she would be elegantly sipping her tea or something. I trust her to deliver, but it can get scary when she’s still not in the mood a minute before she has to be on stage. There were moments I contemplated getting myself a wig and standing-in as Marie-san.

──Jokes aside, KonMari is now a popular Halloween costume. You’ve really made it if you’ve reached this level of fame.

T: We are grateful that Marie-san was nominated as 2015’s Time magazine, “The 100 Most Influential People”, in 2016 we moved to the US, and in 2017 she was a speaker in South by Southwest and had over 400 offers weekly. There were times when I was overwhelmed and prioritized the business even when I knew she was breaking under stress.

──Were there times Marie-san would say no to jobs Takumi-san brought?

M: I said no all the time.

T: Her default was a no. To get a yes, I had to be very strategic about how and when to present the jobs to her. I would wait for that perfect timing and then slide it in quickly. It was a tough period for us because she was exhausted and deserved a longer maternity leave, but we were at point in our business where we couldn’t stop. It still breaks my heart when I look back at that period.

──You were a manager first, and husband second. Has that changed?

T: Yes. Marie-san and I often talk about how our work is not just about making profit. The organization method she developed has touched many people’s lives, as a result that has made our lives better. However, if we are too busy, or not happy, we wouldn’t be able to appreciate any of it. I’ve come to a point where we could quit this any time, because it’s not worth sacrificing our happiness. We’ve gotten this far together because she trusts me as a partner, both professionally and as her husband.

──Marie-san, what do you think of Takumi-san who is both your husband and your manager?

M: He is absolutely fantastic. He’s got such a positive attitude and he sees things as they are. I’m always impressed with how strong his mental state is and how he can see things clearly. If Takumi-san chose a job with a purpose, I know it’s worth giving it my best effort. I trust him to choose things only in my best interest, and I truly appreciate that.

T: I’m glad to know that we are on the same page.

──Are you glad you moved to the US?

T: I can’t imagine it any other way.

Kondo Marie and Takumi Kawahara Interview:
The Husband and Wife Team Behind the KonMari Empire.

Marie Kondo’s books on her organizing method have sold over 12 million copies in 42 countries, and she walked the red carpet at the Emmy as a nominee for the hit Neflix series, Tidying up with Marie Kondo. Takumi Kawahara is the other half of the husband and wife team. He is the producer who made KonMari a household name worldwide and will be publishing his first book. The power couple returned to Japan for the book publication and sat with us for this three-part interview on their journey together, from their first encounter to their current success.

──まず、お二人の出会いから教えてもらえますか。

近藤麻理恵（以下M）「最初に卓巳さんと会ったのは大学4年生のとき、就活関連のイベントの帰りに会場のエレベーターの前ですれ違ったんです。私が降りるとき、たまたま彼が乗るところで。共通の知人の紹介で名刺を交換したんですけど、そのときスーツの胸ポケットに“夢”って書かれたバッジをつけていたのを見て『熱っ！』と思いました」

川原卓巳（以下T）「僕はもうご存知の通り『ちっちゃい！』というのが第一印象です。就活のイベントなのに彼女はワンピースにジャケットというなんだかキラキラした雰囲気で、渡された名刺はピンク色で角が丸くカットされ、“片づけコンサルタント 近藤麻理恵”と書かれていました」

M「大学2年生のときから片づけの仕事をしていたので、その名刺を配ってましたね。母が専業主婦で父が勤め人という家庭で育ったのですが、母がすごく楽しそうに家事をしていたのがきっかけで家の中のこと全般に興味を持つようになって、5歳のときには主婦向けの雑誌を熟読し、最ものめり込んだのが片づけでした。中学生の頃には図書館で本を借りたりしながら片づけの研究をしていました」

T「さらっと言いましたけど、そんな人いませんよね（笑）。僕が5歳の頃は半袖短パンのわんぱく坊主でビックリマンチョコばかり食べていましたし、中学生の頃は人様にお話できるようなことはまったくしていません。広島の全長27キロしかない島の生まれで、祖父がそれぞれ漁師と農家で、大自然の中で生まれ育って、その後、父親が海上自衛隊の自衛官だったので基地のある呉に引っ越しをして18歳まで過ごしていました」

──将来の夢はありました？

T「全然なかったんです。つねに雑誌やトレンドに右往左往していたようなところもあって、自分というものや、どう生きたいかという軸がありませんでした。麻理恵さんとは真逆です。修学旅行で東京への憧れを抱いたことがきっかけで、大学入学と同時に上京しました」

M「私は高校生の頃も自宅の片づけに夢中で、大学時代は一人暮らしをしている友人の家を片づけできることが楽しくて。そのうちに『こんまりちゃんが来ると家がキレイになるらしい』という噂が広まって、いつの間にか仕事になりました」

──その頃から「こんまりちゃん」って呼ばれていたんですね。

M「私はもう小学校6年のときからずっとあだ名はこんまりですね」

──卓巳さんは目立ちたがり屋の子どもでした？

T「実は小学校4年生までは引っ込み思案でした。特殊な環境なのかもしれませんが、すごく真面目だったことが理由でいじめられてしまったんです。なので、いじめられないようにするためにお調子者に変わりました」

──そんなお二人が同時期にいわゆる就職活動を経て就職。その後、どういう形でお付き合いして、結婚に至ったんですか？

M「片づけの仕事が本職になるとは思っていなかったので、普通に就職試験を受けて、人材紹介会社に入社しました。営業職なので、新規開拓営業の成績にランキングをつけられるんですよ。それで、一位を取りたくて。卓巳さんがそのとき同じような職種で、同じような業界にいたのを知っていたので、『お客さんを紹介してほしい』と連絡しました」

T「その電話がかかってきたのは23時ぐらいだったんです。びっくりしましたよ。そんな夜遅くに『一位を取りたい』『MVPになりたいからお客さんを紹介してほしい』と明確に頼まれて」

M「それですぐに彼がお客さんを訪問するときに一緒に連れて行ってもらって」

T「いえ、あなたのためにアポを取ったんです（笑）」

M「お手配いただいたところへ行って参りまして（笑）、契約書をいただいて、一位を取りました。その後は年に一回ぐらいメールで近況報告するぐらいで」

T「僕はその後に大阪へ転勤になって、彼女は会社を辞めたんですよね」

M「そうですね。副業で片づけの仕事をしていくうちに、たくさん依頼をいただくようになって、ちょうど2年勤めたところで独立しました。片づけレッスンの予約が半年先まで埋まってしまうような状況で、お客さんから『レッスンの内容を本で読みたい』と言われるようになり、本の出版のセミナーに通いました。『10年愛されるベストセラー作家養成講座』という半年間のコースを終えて、その最終プレゼンで優勝することができて、８社の出版社からいらした審査員全員に手を挙げていただいたんです」

──その頃、卓巳さんは何をしていました？

T「朝から晩まで始発終電で、必死で営業の仕事をしていました。片づけすぎてテレビも捨ててしまっていたので、彼女がテレビに出演しているのを観たことがなかったんです。麻理恵さんから『本が出たよ』と連絡をもらって本屋へ行って『友だちが書いた本だし』と軽い気持ちで買って読んでみたらびっくり。『これは単なる片づけの本じゃなくて、人生を変える本だ！』と。僕は人材系の会社にいて、みんなお金を払って研修に来て勉強してるけど、彼女がやってるのは家の中でできるライフチェンジング。そんなことを麻理恵さんに話しましたね。

それからはみなさんと同じように彼女の本が売れていくのを目の当たりにしました。そして麻理恵さんが講演で大阪に来るときに、『お久しぶり。今度大阪に行きます』と連絡が来て、ご飯に行ったり案内をしたりしたんです。それがきっかけで、お付き合いするようになったので、最初の出会いからは7年も経っていました」

──お付き合いしたいと思ったきっかけはあったのでしょうか？

T「う〜ん、なんかナチュラルだったんですよね。年齢が28〜29歳で、大阪に来て仕事にも慣れてきて、少し余裕もあって」

──結婚までは自然に？

M「付き合うときから結婚の話は出ていました。結婚前に一年間は付き合うということを楽しみましょうと言ってくれて、実際に一年間お付き合いしましたね。楽しかったな〜」

──それで一年後に卓巳さんからプロポーズしたんですか？

T「大晦日の前日に、食事をした後、お茶を飲みながら『今年もいい1年だったね』と話して、そこで彼女に『来年どんなふうにしたいと思っている？』と聞かれました。一年間付き合ったのでそろそろプロポーズかなとは考えてはいたんですけど、ネックだったのは指輪を買えないっていうことでした。当時はお金がそんなにあるわけでもなく貯められる見込みもなくて、結婚の話を濁していたんです。でも思い切って指輪の話を切り出しました」

M「実は私には欲しい指輪があったんですよ。私のおばあちゃんの婚約指輪なんですけど、それをもらいたいって言って」

──素敵！ それでご結婚され、二人で会社も設立したんですか？

T「そうですね。彼女の仕事の話を聞けば聞くほど、すごく大変な状況だということがわかったんです。依頼が殺到してメールの返事もできていないし、開催するセミナーが3秒とかで埋まっちゃうから申し込みページを一生懸命閉じていく……みたいな作業を頑張っていて。当時『自分だけが片づけるんじゃなくて、片づけを仕事にできる人を増やしたい』と彼女は話していたので、『その仕組み作りは僕が協力できるかも』と、ボランティアで手伝うようになって。そのうちに本業と同じかそれ以上に手伝いのほうが忙しくなって、勤務先の社長に事情を説明して相談したら、『それはあなたにしかできない仕事だから、辞めて独立しなさい』と背中を押してもらったんです」

──First, can you tell us how you met each other?

Marie Kondo (K) : I first met Takumi-san in an elevator hall. It was my senior year in college and I was attending a career conference. I was taking an elevator to leave, and he was there waiting for the elevator I was getting off. A mutual friend introduced us, and we exchanged business cards. Takumi-san was wearing a badge on his suit pocket that said, “YUME (Dream)”and I remember thinking, “wow, this guy’s on fire!”

Takumi Kawahara (T): You would probably agree with me, but my first impression of Marie-san was, “She’s so tiny!” She was gleaming at the career conference in her ultra-feminine dress and jacket setup and handed me a pink business card with rounded corners that said, “Marie Kondo Organizing Consultant”.

M: I was already carrying business cards because I began working as an organization consultant from my second year in college. I grew up in a home with a father with an office job and a stay-at-home mother. My interest in housework began from my mother, who took joy in everything she did at home. At five years old, I was an avid reader of home magazines, and tidying was my favorite topic. By middle school, I was going to libraries to research on organization and tidying.

T: She says this so casually, but that’s pretty incredible. When I was five, I was running around in shorts and t-shirts, eating chocolate bars just for their collectible trading cards. As for my middle school years, I have nothing worthy of sharing. I was born in Hiroshima, on an island only 27 km long, and my grandfathers were a fisherman and a farmer respectively. I grew up surrounded by nature until my family moved to a naval self-defense force base in Kure, where my father worked as an officer, and was there until I turned eighteen.

──Did you have a dream?

T:Not at all. I was a desperately combing through magazines for trends follow and had no clue as to who I was or how I wanted to live. Quite the opposite of Marie-san. I was awe-struck with the big city when I came to Tokyo on my high school senior trip and decided to attend college there.

M: Most of my high school years were spent obsessing over organizing my house. College was great because my friends had their own apartments I could visit and tidy. Before long, people started saying, “Ask KonMari-chan over and she will transform your house.” That’s how tidying became a job.

──The name KonMari goes back that far?

M: I’ve been KonMari since I was twelve.

──Takumi-san, did you stand out as a child?

T: I was actually shy until the fourth grade. Perhaps it was because of the area I was from, but I went through some bullying because kids thought I was too square. To avoid being targeted, I started being louder.

──You both started your careers as new hires. How did you start dating and end up married?

M: I didn’t see organizing as a full-time career at the time, so I applied for jobs in entry-level sales positions was hired by a recruiting agency. Sales agents were ranked by the new cases we closed and I decided to become the top sales agent. I called Takumi-san, who I knew was in a similar industry in a similar position, and asked him to introduce me to his clients.

T: She called me at eleven at night. I was shocked. She demanded straight forward, “Introduce me to your clients. I want to make top sales, I want to be the MVP.”

M: But soon after, he took me along when he was going on a client visit.

T: No, I made that appointment just for you!

M: Well yes, he kindly made some arrangements for me, I closed the deal and was became the MVP. After that, we emailed each other about once a year just to keep in touch.

T: Then I was transferred to Osaka, and she quit her job.

M: Yes. Organizing was my side business, but it kept growing, and I left my sales job after two years. My organization seminars were booked six months in advance, and clients began requesting for written versions of the seminars. To write a book, I signed up for a six-month publication training course, “How to write a bestseller that will be loved for a decade.” My book proposal won the course’s final presentation competition. All eight publishers judging the competition bid to publish my book.

──Takumi-san, what were you doing then?

T: I was working around the clock in sales, from the first to last train. I was also into minimizing and threw out my TV, so I had no idea that Marie-san was making TV appearances. She sent me a message that she had written a book, so I went to picked up a copy out of courtesy as a friend,but blown away after reading it. It was not simply a book on home organization, but a book on changing a lifestyle. I told her that based on my experience in the HR industry, people pay to attend self-improvement lifestyle change seminars, and that her method was exactly that only done at home.

After that, I was just like everyone else and witnessed her book become a bestseller. Then Marie-san contacted me when she was coming to Osaka to give a talk, so I showed her around town and went to dinners, and we eventually began dating. It was seven years since we first met.

──Was there a trigger that took you beyond friendship?

T: It just happened naturally. I was 28 or 29, my job in Osaka was going well, and was at a point in life where I could think of the future.

──This also naturally led to marriage?

M: Marriage was on the table from the time we started dating. He had told me, let’s enjoy a year of dating, and that’s exactly what we did. That was such a fun year for us.

──Did Takumi-san propose a year later as promised?

T: The night before New Year’s Eve, we were having tea after dinner and saying what a great year it had been, and she asked me, “What do you want to do in the coming year?” We had been together for a year and I wanted to propose, but I couldn’t afford an engagement ring. I kept putting off the proposal because I wouldn’t be able to save enough any time soon. I finally told Marie-san honestly about the ring.

M: I told him that I already had a particular ring in mind. I asked him if he could propose to me with my grandmother’s engagement ring.

──That’s romantic! And you got married and launched your company together.

T: Yes, and hearing more about her work made it clear just how stretched thin she was. She was drowning in mundane tasks like going through massive amount of emails or scrambling to shut down her online registration for a seminar that sold out in three seconds.

Back then, Marie-san would say, “I don’t want to be the only one organizing, I need more people to do this professionally” and I thought I could make that happen. At first, I was just helping out as a volunteer, but her projects started taking up more time than my day job. I explained the situation to my boss and he courage me to pursue my new venture. He told me, “That’s something only you can do. Go make it happen” and he nudged me out the door.
